Australia were bowled out for 198 in their first innings of the Darwin Test after Bangladesh’s pace attack tore through their batting lineup. Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was the standout performer, claiming six wickets to register the best bowling figures of his Test career.
Bangladesh’s pacers dominated from the beginning, with Hasan, Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain repeatedly troubling the Australian batters.
Australia lost their first wicket for 45 runs when Hasan’s fuller delivery took the edge of Weatherald’s bat and he was caught by Litton Das after scoring 23 off 37 balls. Hasan struck again soon after, bowling Travis Head through an inside edge.
Ebadot missed a chance to dismiss Steven Smith, but soon removed Marnus Labuschagne for one, with Najmul Hossain Shanto taking the catch. Australia lost their third wicket at 61.
Taskin then dismissed Cameron Green for 13, with Mushfiqur Rahim taking a fine catch. Australia were reduced to 74 for four before Smith and Alex Carey put together a 55-run partnership.
The partnership was broken when Carey was bowled by Ebadot through an inside edge. Taskin then trapped Beau Webster with a sharp inswinger, leaving Australia six wickets down for 152.
Smith held one end together and reached his half-century from 76 balls. Hasan then dismissed captain Pat Cummins, caught by Litton, before removing Mitchell Starc for just one.
Australia went into the tea break at 183 for eight after 48 overs, with Bangladesh firmly in control.
The pressure continued after the break. Hasan finally ended Smith’s resistance when the batter top-edged a delivery and was caught behind by Litton. Smith made 71 off 109 balls, giving Hasan his fifth wicket.
Hasan completed his six-wicket haul by dismissing Nathan Lyon for seven, wrapping up Australia’s innings at 198.
Hasan finished with career-best figures of 6-55.
