Bangladesh ended the second day of the Darwin Test in a commanding position, taking a 153-run lead over Australia after an impressive day with the bat.
The visitors finished the day on 351 for 6, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz unbeaten on 32 and Hasan Mahmud on 13.
The day began perfectly for Bangladesh as Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Mominul Haque resumed on 96 for 1 and put together a 102-run partnership.
Tanzid then scored his maiden Test century off 188 balls, becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test hundred in Australia. The left-hander made 101 off 197 deliveries.
After Tanzid’s dismissal, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto continued to build Bangladesh’s lead alongside Mushfiqur Rahim. However, Australia gained momentum with the second new ball.
Shanto was dismissed for 84 by Josh Hazlewood, before Litton Das fell for a duck to Mitchell Starc and Mushfiqur was dismissed for 36 by Pat Cummins.
All three wickets came from deliveries outside the off stump that moved away, with the batters edging to Steve Smith.
With Bangladesh reduced to 312 for 6, Mehidy and Hasan Mahmud steadied the innings and helped the visitors regain control.
Australia had been bowled out for 198 in their first innings, leaving Bangladesh with a 153-run lead at stumps.
The hosts had one final chance on the last delivery when Mehidy played a cut off Marnus Labuschagne, but Cameron Green could not hold on to the low catch, allowing Bangladesh to finish another strong day on top.
