Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has congratulated the Bangladesh national cricket team on their historic nine-wicket Test victory over Australia on Australian soil.
Bangladesh defeated the hosts by nine wickets in the first Test of the series in Darwin on Sunday (August 16), securing their first-ever Test win in Australia after a 23-year wait to play a Test there again.
The prime minister was travelling to Kishoreganj when Bangladesh sealed the historic victory. After the match, he spoke to the players via video call and congratulated them on behalf of the people of Bangladesh.
Tarique Rahman said the victory against a strong Australian side on their home ground was a matter of great pride for Bangladesh cricket. He attributed the success to the players’ determination, confidence, skills and team effort.
The prime minister also congratulated the players, coaching staff and everyone involved with the team. He expressed hope that Bangladesh would maintain their strong performance in the next Test and turn the opportunity into a series victory.
Bangladesh had previously defeated Australia in a Test in Mirpur in 2017. The latest victory marks their first Test win against Australia on Australian soil.
