Football Australia has reaffirmed its support for head coach Tony Popovic despite mounting criticism following the Socceroos’ penalty shootout defeat to Egypt, which extended the nation’s long wait for a breakthrough victory in the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup.

Popovic came under fire after Australia’s dramatic last-32 exit in Dallas on Friday, particularly for his decision to substitute first-choice goalkeeper Patrick Beach late in extra time with penalties looming.

The Australian coach opted to bring on veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan specifically for the shootout, but the move failed to pay off as Ryan was unable to save any of Egypt’s spot-kicks. Egypt ultimately secured a 4-2 victory in the penalty shootout after the match ended level following extra time.

The decision drew criticism from several high-profile former Australian internationals, while Popovic also faced scrutiny for entrusting 18-year-old Lucas Herrington with one of Australia’s penalties.

The teenager’s miss proved costly in the decisive shootout.

Despite the backlash, Football Australia chief executive Martin Kugeler strongly defended Popovic’s decisions.

“Every fan will think about what could have been done better,” Kugeler told Australian media in Dallas.

“But the coaching staff and Tony Popovic are always in the best position to judge what the team needs in that moment.

“In hindsight, everyone believes they know the right decision, but these calls have to be made based on what you’ve seen in training and your assessment of the players. Tony Popovic has our full confidence.”

Popovic, who took charge of the national team in 2024, guided Australia to their sixth consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance.

His contract was extended just days before the tournament and now runs through the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5.

“We’re absolutely satisfied with the decision to extend his contract,” Kugeler said.

“He is the right person to lead this group into the next major tournament and to apply the experience and lessons gained from this World Cup campaign.”
