Former Australian batter Mark Waugh has described Bangladesh’s historic nine-wicket Test victory over Australia in Darwin as one of the biggest upsets he can remember on Australian soil.
The victory was Bangladesh’s first-ever Test win in Australia, ending their 23-year wait to play a Test there again.
Speaking on Fox Cricket, Waugh said, “Of the upsets I can remember in Australia, this is probably the biggest.”
Waugh compared Bangladesh’s triumph with the West Indies’ famous victory over Australia at the Gabba a few years ago, but said Bangladesh’s achievement was even more significant given the circumstances.
“The West Indies beat Australia at the Gabba three or four years ago. That was also an upset. But this one is bigger because Bangladesh were without their two best bowlers, Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam. There is also a significant difference in the rankings, while Australia fielded a full-strength team. Taking everything into account, it is a really big win,” he said.
Bangladesh arrived in Darwin as underdogs after being bowled out for just 54 in the second innings of their tour match against a Cricket Australia XI.
However, they quickly put that disappointment behind them, dismissing Australia for 198 on the first day of the Test and then scoring 426 themselves. They went on to complete a historic nine-wicket victory on the fourth day.
