Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Maracana Stadium, which hosted the 2014 FIFA World Cup final, will stage the final of the 2027 Women’s World Cup nearly 13 years later. The tournament’s opening match will also be held at the venue.
FIFA released the preliminary schedule for the 32-team tournament on Thursday.
The tournament will kick off at the Maracana on June 24 with a match involving Brazil. The 2027 Women’s World Cup will be the first edition to be held in South America. After nearly a month of competition, the final will take place at the same stadium on July 25.
According to FIFA, each of the eight host cities will stage at least seven matches, including at least one knockout game. Brasilia, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador will host matches through the round of 16.
The quarter-finals will be played in Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, while Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo will host the semi-finals.
The schedule announcement also puts the Maracana in a unique record. It will become only the third stadium to host finals of both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups, after Sweden’s Rasunda Stadium and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, United States.
