Argentina star Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer (MLS) for striking Bangladeshi-American footballer Quinn Sullivan during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw against Philadelphia Union on August 20.
The incident occurred late in the match when Messi and Sullivan became involved in a heated exchange.
Messi was seen placing his hand on the back of Sullivan’s head and neck during the confrontation.
MLS subsequently fined Messi, although the amount of the fine was not disclosed.
Sullivan’s younger brother, Cavan Sullivan, was also involved in a separate confrontation during the match and was initially shown a red card.
However, an independent MLS review panel later unanimously overturned the red card and his one-match suspension.
The Sullivan brothers are of Bangladeshi descent and are known in Bangladesh’s football circles.
