Bangladesh rise to highest-ever position in test rankings

Bangladesh have achieved their highest-ever position in the ICC Test rankings following their historic Test victory in Australia.

In the latest rankings released on Sunday, Bangladesh climbed three places to sixth, marking the highest position the Tigers have ever reached in Test cricket.

Bangladesh currently have 78 rating points. Their significant rise came largely as a result of their nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin.

The historic win helped Bangladesh move up from seventh to sixth. The top five teams above them are Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, India and England.

Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the West Indies are just behind Bangladesh in seventh, eighth and ninth places respectively, with 76, 75 and 74 rating points.

However, holding on to sixth place will not be easy for Bangladesh, as the gap between them and the teams below is very narrow.

Bangladesh had previously reached seventh in the Test rankings for the first time after beating Pakistan 2-0 at home. Their historic victory in Australia has now taken Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side beyond that previous record.

Bangladesh drew the two-match series against Australia 1-1 after suffering a heavy defeat in the final Test in Mackay.

Despite the disappointing result in the last match, the tour’s biggest achievement remains Bangladesh’s first-ever Test victory on Australian soil—and the historic rise in the Test rankings that followed.
