Twenty-one former international cricket captains from different countries have written to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, expressing concern over the health and detention conditions of former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Imran, who led Pakistan to its 1992 World Cup triumph, entered politics after retiring from cricket and served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
Since his removal from office, he has faced multiple cases and received prison sentences of 10, 14 and 17 years in different cases.
He is currently being held at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. Concerns over his health, particularly his reported eye condition, have prompted renewed intervention from the former cricket captains.
In their letter, the 21 former captains raised concerns over the implementation of a Supreme Court order regarding Imran Khan’s medical examination and family visits.
They called for a complete medical board, formed in line with the court’s directive, to independently assess Khan’s health.
They also urged authorities to investigate reports that he may have suffered loss of vision in his right eye.
The former captains further demanded that Khan be allowed weekly meetings with his family without administrative delays and that any treatment recommended by the medical board be implemented promptly.
This is the second such letter from former international captains in the past six months. In February, 14 former captains had also expressed concern over Khan’s health and detention conditions.
The signatories stressed that their appeal was not intended to interfere in Pakistan’s internal legal process.
Rather, they said, it came from their long-standing relationships with Khan as former teammates and rivals on the cricket field.
