Bangladesh national team midfielder Hamza Choudhury has ended his two-decade association with Leicester City, joining Sheffield United on a one-year contract.
The Championship club confirmed the signing in a statement on its official website. The transfer fee was not disclosed.
The 28-year-old midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield United, making 16 league appearances. He also featured in the Championship play-off final, where Sheffield suffered a defeat to Sunderland.
Hamza, who came through Leicester City’s academy, had already established a strong connection with Sheffield during his loan spell last season. Sheffield manager Chris Wilder believes the midfielder’s versatility will strengthen the squad.
“We all know Hamza can play in that (right-back) position and many other roles. In the last 10 games of his first spell here, particularly the play-off semi-final and final, he was probably our best player,” Wilder said on the club’s website.
Hamza made 166 appearances for Leicester’s first team over 11 seasons after progressing through the club’s academy. He also featured three times for Leicester this season. He was part of the squad that won the historic Premier League title in the 2015-16 season and also played a role in Leicester’s FA Cup triumph over Chelsea in 2021.
Reflecting on his departure from Leicester, Hamza said, “I was at Leicester for 20 years, so it’s a big change for me and my family. But I’m really looking forward to the change and hopefully we can have a big season here.”
Hamza previously worked under Wilder during a loan spell at Watford before joining Sheffield United last season. He said he is excited to work with the manager again.
“I worked with the manager at Watford and then briefly here. We’ve always kept in touch, and I really love playing under him,” Hamza said.
