Bangladesh secured a nerve-wracking victory over Singapore in their final match at the Asian Games, winning 2-1 in a shootout after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan.

The victory saw Bangladesh, making their Asian Games debut in women’s hockey, finish ninth among 12 participating teams.

Both sides played an evenly contested game from the start, but Bangladesh took the lead with their first clear opportunity. Irene Akter Riya scored a fine field goal in the 10th minute to put Bangladesh 1-0 ahead.

Bangladesh held on to the lead until halftime.

Singapore increased the pressure after the break and were helped when Bangladesh’s Lima Akter was shown a yellow card and temporarily left the field in the 42nd minute.

Two minutes later, Singapore capitalised on the numerical advantage to equalise. Tau Li Min converted a penalty corner to make it 1-1.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the remaining minutes of regulation time, but neither could find the breakthrough.

The match therefore went to a shootout, where Bangladesh kept their composure to win 2-1 and secure ninth place in the women’s hockey competition.
