Maketa to join Bangladesh team as new assistant coach

South African coach Malibongwe Maketa has been appointed as the new assistant coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed. He is set to join the team in the United Arab Emirates during their ongoing tour.

Maketa, 46, has signed a contract with the BCB from October 2026 until November 2028 and will work under head coach Phil Simmons.

He is expected to join the coaching staff for Bangladesh’s upcoming Test series against Afghanistan in the UAE.

The South African has more than two decades of coaching experience across domestic, international and high-performance cricket.

He previously served as an assistant coach of the South Africa national team from 2017 to 2019 and was part of the Proteas’ coaching staff at the 2019 ODI World Cup.

Maketa has also worked as head coach of South Africa A and the Under-19 team, as well as head coach of the national academy and the Warriors franchise. Most recently, he coached South Africa’s Under-19 side and worked with the national academy.
