Bangladesh Under-19 Women suffered a heartbreaking four-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in a last-ball thriller in the Tri-Nation Series in Faisalabad, Pakistan, on Monday.
The defeat came after Bangladesh opened their campaign with a 30-run victory over hosts Pakistan.
Batting first after winning the toss, Bangladesh posted 119-7 in their allotted 20 overs, with captain Sadia Islam top-scoring with a 22-ball 39.
Bangladesh made a disastrous start, losing openers Mymuna Naher and Achen Jannat cheaply before Bibi Ayesha was dismissed for a duck, leaving the side struggling at 28-3 in the eighth over.
Nishita Akter Nishi and Sadia then steadied the innings with a 56-run fourth-wicket partnership, helping Bangladesh cross the 100-run mark.
Nishi scored 26 before being run out, while the lower order failed to build on the platform provided by the pair as Bangladesh finished with a modest total.
The bowlers, however, kept Bangladesh firmly in the contest with a spirited performance, striking at regular intervals and preventing Sri Lanka from taking control.
Sri Lankan opener Sanjana Kavindi kept her side in the chase despite some disciplined bowling from Bangladesh, scoring 48 off 46 balls before she was dismissed.
Her innings proved crucial in taking the match into the final over, with Danodya Sewmini and Limanasa Thilakarathna holding their nerve to complete the chase off the final ball.
Sri Lanka finished on 120-6 to seal a dramatic four-wicket victory.
Nishi was Bangladesh’s standout performer with both bat and ball, taking 2-26, but her impressive all-round effort ultimately went in vain.
