Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud has set two milestones in the Abu Dhabi Test against Afghanistan, becoming the country’s first fast bowler to take a Test hat-trick and the quickest among Bangladesh pacers to claim 50 wickets in the format.
Hasan reached the 50-wicket mark in his 17th Test, breaking the previous record held by Taskin Ahmed, who achieved the feat in his 18th Test against Pakistan in May.
Former Bangladesh pacer Mashrafe Bin Mortaza took 19 Tests to reach 50 wickets, while Shahadat Hossain Rajib needed 21 matches.
On the third day of the Test against Afghanistan, Hasan took a hat-trick by dismissing Ismat Alam, Qais Ahmad and Zia-ur-Rehman off three consecutive deliveries.
Before Hasan, Alok Kapali and Sohag Gazi had taken Test hat-tricks for Bangladesh, but both were spinners. Hasan is therefore the first Bangladeshi pace bowler to achieve the feat in Test cricket.
Mashrafe remains Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker among pacers in Tests, with 78 wickets. Shahadat is second with 72, followed by Taskin with 59 and Hasan with 50.
