Bangladesh dominated the second session of the first Test against the West Indies in Mirpur on Wednesday, with opener Sadman Islam moving closer to a century, remaining unbeaten on 79 at tea.

Bangladesh reached 177 for three at the break, with Sadman and Towhid Hridoy unbeaten on 79 and 36 respectively. The pair added 67 runs for the fourth wicket to steady the innings.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto elected to bat first in the opening match of the two-Test series.

The hosts suffered an early setback when opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim was caught at second slip off Jayden Seales for seven.

Sadman then joined Mominul Haque to rebuild the innings, sharing a 59-run partnership for the second wicket before Mominul departed for 28 towards the end of the first session.

After lunch, Sadman and Shanto attempted to consolidate, but the captain fell for 16, ending their 42-run stand.

Hridoy then joined Sadman at the crease, and the pair batted confidently to take Bangladesh to tea without further loss.

Meanwhile, experienced batter Mushfiqur Rahim missed the Test after sustaining an injury during the final training session before the match.
