Despite being level on goals, Mbappe currently holds the edge in the Golden Boot standings due to the tournament’s tiebreak rules. The first criterion after goals is assists, and the French forward has provided three assists, compared with Messi’s two.
If players remain tied on both goals and assists, the award is decided by fewer minutes played, rewarding the more efficient scorer. If the deadlock still remains, the number of non-penalty goals is taken into account.
On that measure, Messi has an advantage. The Argentine has failed to convert either of his two penalty attempts—against Austria and Egypt—while Mbappe has scored one of his two penalties.
England duo Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham remain in contention with six goals each, while France’s Ousmane Dembele and Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal have scored five goals apiece and still have one match left to improve their totals.
Norway’s Erling Haaland also netted seven goals, but with Norway already eliminated, his chances of claiming the Golden Boot are over.
