OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok suffered major outages on Thursday, disrupting services for users across several countries. More than 14,000 outage reports were recorded, with ChatGPT accounting for over 12,000 complaints at the peak.
Users faced problems accessing chats, logging in, uploading files and using other AI features. Grok was also temporarily unavailable on its web and mobile apps. The outages disrupted some third-party services, including AI coding platform Cursor.
All three platforms gradually restored their services. Microsoft Azure disruptions were among the possible factors examined, but none of the companies confirmed a common cause.
The incident highlighted the complex and interconnected infrastructure supporting today’s major AI services.
OpenAI said ChatGPT and Codex experienced elevated error rates, affecting conversations, logins, file uploads, voice mode, search, Deep Research and image generation.
OpenAI later reported that a mitigation had been applied and that the affected ChatGPT and Codex services had recovered.
Anthropic also reported elevated errors affecting several Claude models and services. The disruption initially involved Claude Mythos 5.1, Fable 5.1 and Opus 5 before additional models were listed.
Claude AI, Claude API, Claude Code and Claude Cowork were among the affected services. Anthropic subsequently reported that the issue had been resolved and services had returned to normal.
