Within just 12 days of its public launch, Meta’s AI-powered app Muse has attracted a strong response from users, with downloads in the United States and Canada surpassing those of ChatGPT’s iOS app during the same period.
According to market research firm Apptopia, the iOS version of Muse was downloaded nearly 1.8 million times in the US and Canada in its first 12 days, compared with about 1.3 million downloads of the ChatGPT iOS app in the two countries.
However, the comparison comes with an important geographical difference. Muse is currently available only in the US and Canada, while ChatGPT’s mobile app has been available in far more countries. To make the comparison more consistent, Apptopia therefore looked only at iOS downloads in the two countries.
Worldwide, Muse recorded nearly 2.8 million downloads during its first 12 days, according to Apptopia. The rapid growth helped the app reach the top of the free-app chart on the US App Store.
Muse also recorded strong early engagement. Apptopia estimated that the app had about 642,000 daily active users during its first 12 days, compared with around 231,000 for ChatGPT.
For iOS alone, Muse had an estimated 359,000 daily active users, exceeding ChatGPT’s total daily active users during the same period, according to the research firm.
Meta’s large social media ecosystem may have contributed to Muse’s rapid early growth. The app is integrated with Meta platforms including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, giving the company access to a large pool of existing users.
Apptopia data showed that more than 95 per cent of Muse’s early users were also Facebook users, while nearly 63 per cent used Instagram.
The figures suggest Meta’s established social media network may have helped the new AI app gain users quickly after its launch.
