The United States and China have agreed to establish a dedicated communication channel to help prevent unexpected incidents and manage risks related to artificial intelligence (AI), following a three-day state visit to Washington by US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The White House said the agreement was reached following a summit between the two leaders in Washington.

The talks covered technology and trade, as well as the stalled conflict involving Iran. The two leaders also said they would meet twice more at international summits scheduled to take place in China and the United States later this year.

According to Al Jazeera, despite the high-profile and formal nature of the summit, the talks did not produce any major breakthrough.

The two countries also agreed to extend the deadline of their existing trade agreement, which was due to expire in November, until January to allow more time for negotiations.

After the meeting, Trump said the talks had strengthened his personal relationship with Xi and could bring long-term benefits to the United States.

Xi called for China-US relations to be viewed as a form of “healthy competition” and said both countries have a major responsibility to ensure AI technology is used properly and managed responsibly.
