Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Monday said equipping the younger generation with modern technical and innovation-driven skills is essential for transforming Bangladesh into a prosperous nation capable of competing on the global stage.
He made the remarks while addressing a programme at the Bangladesh-China Friendship International Conference Center in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, where the Ministry of Education organised a nationwide secondary-level tree plantation campaign alongside the national ‘Startup, Science Project and Innovation Idea Showcasing’ competition and award ceremony.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the event as the chief guest, inaugurating the tree plantation programme, visiting innovation exhibition stalls and presenting awards to the winning young scientists.
Speaking as the special guest, the education minister said the prime minister was highly impressed by the creativity, scientific knowledge and innovative ideas demonstrated by students from across the country.
“The new generation possesses enormous talent. If we can equip them with modern technical skills and quality education, Bangladesh will emerge as a prosperous nation with a strong global presence,” he said.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to education reform, Dr Milon announced that Tk 18,000 crore has been allocated for technical education in the current budget to strengthen skills development and prepare young people for the demands of the modern economy.
He also said the government has allocated Tk 1.36 lakh crore for the education sector to finance a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education, expanding opportunities and modernising educational institutions.
“The mismanagement and stagnation of previous regimes are being systematically addressed,” the minister said, adding that the government is undertaking comprehensive reforms to build a more efficient and future-ready education system.
Addressing students, he urged them to embrace science, technology and innovation, saying the government’s vision is to establish a “Bangladesh First” identity through knowledge, research and technological advancement.
The event also featured presentations from students representing the top 10 winning teams in the national competition.
A student from a remote area of Khagrachhari said participating on a national stage had been a dream come true and demonstrated that talent exists in every corner of the country, regardless of geography.
Another participant from Chatkhil High School expressed gratitude for the government’s increased investment in technology education, saying it has created new opportunities for young innovators to develop their ideas.
The programme was chaired by Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Abdul Khaleq, while Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) Prof Dr Khan Mainuddin Al Mahmud Sohel delivered the welcome address.
Among others, the programme was attended by Prime Minister’s spouse Dr Zubaida Rahman, Defence Adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam, Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin, Chief Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, Press Secretary AAM Saleh Shibli and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman.
