Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, Information Technology, and Science and Technology Fakir Mahbub Anam has called for increased investment in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, biotechnology, electronics and robotics, describing them as the key pillars of Bangladesh’s future knowledge-based economy.
Speaking at the National Semiconductor Summit in Dhaka on Saturday, the minister said these technologies are not merely emerging sectors but fundamental drivers of industrial growth, education, healthcare and national competitiveness.
He said the government’s vision goes beyond adopting technology, aiming instead to develop indigenous innovation and build a skilled workforce through greater emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.
According to the minister, AI is already transforming healthcare, agriculture, education, manufacturing and public service delivery, while biotechnology is creating new opportunities in food security, medical science and environmental protection. Robotics and advanced electronics, he added, will significantly improve industrial productivity and service quality.
Fakir Mahbub Anam announced that the government is moving forward with the establishment of a National Biotechnology Commission to strengthen collaboration among universities, research institutions, industries, startups and investors. The initiative is expected to accelerate the commercialization of research and promote biotechnology-based industries.
He said Bangladesh aims to become a regional hub for biotechnology research and industrial development while ensuring that the benefits of modern technology reach every citizen. The government is also working to empower students, researchers, entrepreneurs, freelancers and industry with greater access to advanced technologies.
Referring to his recent participation in the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in China, the minister said Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized global cooperation and the principle of “leaving no one behind” in technological development. Bangladesh, he said, shares the same vision of inclusive technological advancement.
Inviting domestic and international investors, the minister said Bangladesh is creating a business-friendly environment for investment in AI, semiconductors and other deep-tech industries. Such investments, he noted, will create high-value jobs, promote innovation and strengthen the country’s digital economy.
He added that the government remains committed to supporting young innovators and building a strong innovation ecosystem through collaboration among academia, industry and research institutions.
