Nepal’s tourism hub of Pokhara has introduced a tourist-friendly QR code service to enhance visitor safety and improve tourism management through technology.
By scanning the QR code, both domestic and international tourists can instantly access Nepal Police emergency contact numbers, tourist safety guidelines, essential contact details and other travel-related information.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Dipendra GC, chief of the Gandaki Province Police Office, said the initiative would help tourists quickly obtain vital information during emergencies and make their travel experience safer. He added that the police have been implementing various measures to make tourist destinations more secure, well-managed and visitor-friendly, while calling for stronger cooperation with the private sector.
Pokhara Tourism Council President Taranath Pahari said ensuring a safe environment is the foundation of tourism development and stressed the importance of continued coordination between tourism businesses and law enforcement.
Former council president Gopi Bahadur Bhattarai called for the installation of modern CCTV cameras to further strengthen the city’s security system, while Krishna Prasad Acharya, president of the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) Gandaki Chapter, urged authorities to establish permanent security units along trekking routes to improve emergency response and rescue operations.
Hotel Association Pokhara President Laxman Subedi also called for stricter monitoring of hotel operators who transport guests on motorcycles, saying the practice harms the city’s tourism image.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Navaraj Bhattarai, chief of the Baidam Ward Police Office, said the QR codes would provide visitors with information on major tourist attractions, parking areas, police posts, emergency contacts, traffic rules, cleanliness guidelines and permitted and prohibited activities.
The QR codes will be installed at Barahichowk, major tourist attractions, hotels and other public places across Pokhara. Police will also distribute awareness leaflets, emphasizing that ensuring a safe, responsible and well-managed tourism environment is a shared responsibility.
