To ease traffic congestion in the capital, the kitchen market at Karwan Bazar will be relocated to Gabtoli. The decision was taken at a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Saturday (August 29).
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was convened to address traffic congestion in Dhaka, modernize the traffic management system, and restore discipline in the transport sector.
Relevant authorities were instructed to take the necessary steps to implement the decision.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Shahadat Hossain Swadhin said the meeting discussed in detail the ongoing traffic congestion in Dhaka, pressure of vehicles on major roads and flyovers, public transport management, reorganization of bus terminals, improvement of parking facilities, and modernization of the traffic management system.
The meeting also decided to introduce an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system at toll plazas on expressways and flyovers. The initiative aims to make toll collection more modern, faster, and technology-driven. A mobile application will also be developed for this purpose. The Prime Minister instructed the relevant authorities to complete the work within four months.
The meeting further decided to relocate the Fulbaria Bus Terminal to Keraniganj, expand the Gabtoli Bus Terminal, formulate a policy for the operation of autorickshaws, and take action against unauthorized double-decker sleeper buses.
Those present at the meeting included Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, Local Government State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, Pabna-5 constituency lawmaker Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, and other senior officials concerned.
