The government has made it mandatory for all public transport vehicles across Bangladesh to install and keep Global Positioning System (GPS) devices operational from 1 August, as part of efforts to strengthen road safety and modernise the country’s transport management system.
From that date, operators applying for new vehicle registration or renewal of fitness certificates must submit proof of GPS installation and demonstrate that the device is functioning through a mobile application.
The directive was announced in a public notice issued by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on Tuesday.
According to the notice, the Road Transport and Highways Division issued a gazette notification on 11 June requiring GPS devices to be installed and operational in all public transport vehicles from 1 August.
The BRTA said the technical specifications for GPS devices are available at its local offices and on its official website. From 1 August, vehicle owners must submit the required GPS installation documents to the relevant BRTA office and demonstrate the device’s functionality via a mobile app when applying for registration or renewing fitness certificates.
The authority said that under Section 25 of the Road Transport Act, 2018, and Rule 55 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022, registration and fitness certificate renewals will only be approved after verifying that the vehicle is equipped with a functioning GPS device.
The BRTA has urged transport owners and their representatives to complete the necessary preparations and cooperate in implementing the new requirement.
