The Sunamganj district administration has imposed a ban on the movement of houseboats and tourist vessels in parts of Tanguar Haor to protect the wetland’s fragile ecosystem and biodiversity.
Under the directive, houseboats and tourist boats are prohibited from entering the watchtower area and its surrounding core ecological zones until further notice.
Authorities said the measure aims to preserve the environmental balance and prevent further degradation caused by uncontrolled tourism.
Officials clarified that the restriction applies only to boat operations in the designated protected areas.
Tourists are still allowed to visit Tanguar Haor, provided they comply with the environmental guidelines issued by the district administration.
Tanguar Haor, a Ramsar-designated wetland in Sunamganj, is one of Bangladesh’s most ecologically significant freshwater ecosystems and a vital habitat for migratory birds and aquatic wildlife.
Authorities have recently stepped up conservation efforts amid growing concerns over pollution, noise, and pressure from unregulated tourism.
