The body of renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja has been recovered from Pakistan’s Broad Peak, days after a devastating avalanche struck his international climbing expedition, officials confirmed on Sunday.
Pakistani rescuers also recovered the bodies of three other climbers—Wang Zhong of China and Nepali climbers Nima Sherpa and Kili Pemba Sherpa—from the mountain in the Karakoram range.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan praised military personnel, civilian rescuers and volunteers for their efforts in the difficult recovery operation.
Purja was leading a 10-member international expedition when an avalanche swept through Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain.
The tragedy claimed the lives of all expedition members, making it one of the deadliest mountaineering disasters in the region in recent years.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest mountaineers, Purja gained global fame in 2019 after climbing all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres in a record 189 days. His extraordinary feat was featured in the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
