After an eight-year hiatus, regular international flights by a foreign airline have resumed at Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport. Oman-based SalamAir launched direct flights between Muscat and Sylhet on Tuesday, September 1.
The inaugural flight arrived at Osmani International Airport at 7:55am carrying 133 passengers and departed for Muscat at 9:23am with 224 passengers.
The aircraft was welcomed with a water-cannon salute and an official ceremony at the airport.
SalamAir initially plans to operate three weekly flights on the Muscat-Sylhet route. The airline is reportedly planning to increase the frequency to five flights a week from October and operate daily flights from January 2027.
The resumption ends a long gap in foreign airline operations at Osmani International Airport. Flydubai, the first foreign carrier to operate scheduled flights from Sylhet, began services in 2015 but suspended its operations in September 2018.
The new direct service is expected to make travel easier and potentially more affordable for expatriate Bangladeshis in Oman, while also boosting tourism, trade and regional connectivity.
