India will take “necessary steps” to protect its interests if Bangladesh moves to review or amend bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs), Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday.
Jaiswal was responding to questions about Bangladesh’s reported plan to review 101 agreements and MoUs signed with India.
“We have seen some media reports on this. However, we have not received any official communication from the Bangladesh government,” he said at a regular briefing in New Delhi.
Jaiswal said India would take necessary measures to safeguard its interests if Bangladesh formally moves to review the agreements.
Bangladesh Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said on September 11 that the government was reviewing all previous agreements and MoUs with India and would announce the findings soon. He said the terms and benefits of the agreements were being examined and that cancellation could be considered if necessary.
Moni also said Bangladesh wanted to maintain friendly relations with India while giving priority to its national interests.
On the 1996 Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, which expires in December, Jaiswal said existing bilateral mechanisms and technical-level talks between the two countries would continue.
The 30-year treaty is due to expire in December 2026.
