Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives State Minister Mir Shahe Alam has said local government elections will be held next January, with the BNP supporting a single candidate in each contest.
He said party members who contest as rebel candidates against the BNP’s decision will face disciplinary action.
Shahe Alam made the remarks on Thursday (September 24) while speaking at a programme in Banshkhali, Chattogram, where financial assistance was distributed among families affected by floods.
He urged BNP leaders and activists to prepare for the upcoming elections by staying connected with the people.
The state minister also alleged that the Jamaat and National Citizens Party (NCP) have longstanding ties with the Awami League, claiming that their ongoing movement amounts to helping the Awami League.
He further said those who had “betrayed” the BNP in the last election would no longer have a place in the party.
At the programme, officials said around 12,000 houses in Banshkhali were damaged in the floods last July. On Thursday, 510 affected families received Tk30,000 each to help rebuild their homes.
Chattogram District Council Administrator Mohammad Mahbuber Rahman Shamim chaired the programme, which was also attended by Chattogram-12 MP Enamul Haque Enam, NGO Affairs Bureau Director General Dr Mohammad Zakaria, Local Government Division Joint Secretary Monowara Begum, Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Zahidul Haque Mia, Police Superintendent Masudul Alam and other officials.
