DHAKA: Readymade garment workers (RMG) from several factories blocked a road in Azampur, Uttara, in the capital for the second consecutive day on Thursday, demanding higher wages.
The workers took to the streets around 10am on October 15, disrupting traffic in the area. The road blockade caused significant inconvenience to office-goers and pedestrians. Many people were forced to walk to their destinations.
The workers said rising prices of essential commodities, house rents, medical expenses and their children’s education costs had made it increasingly difficult to make ends meet on their current wages. They said they were protesting to demand pay increases in line with the rising cost of living.
Officer-in-Charge of Uttara East Police Station Morshed Alam said discussions with the protesting workers were ongoing to maintain a peaceful situation. He added that law enforcement agencies were prepared to prevent any untoward incidents.
