DHAKA: The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) seized 244 litres of illegal foreign liquor and beer during a raid on a resthouse in the capital’s Gulshan area on Thursday night. The establishment’s manager was arrested.

The DNC disclosed the information on Friday, saying the resthouse, located in Gulshan-2, did not have a bar licence. It had allegedly been illegally storing and selling foreign liquor and beer wholesale and retail for a long time. The establishment also organised DJ parties by selling tickets and supplied foreign liquor, beer and other drugs to partygoers.

According to the DNC, officers raided the resthouse at around 2:30am on Friday after verifying the information. The operation was led by Zahid Hossain Mollah, additional director of the DNC’s Dhaka divisional office, with several DNC teams taking part.

During the raid, officers seized 223 bottles of foreign liquor containing a total of 177 litres. They also seized 67 litres of illegal beer in 209 bottles and cans.

The establishment’s manager, Ataur Rahman alias Shamim, 42, was present during the operation. When asked to provide documents proving the legality of the seized liquor and beer, he failed to produce the necessary paperwork.

He was arrested on charges of illegally stockpiling and storing liquor and beer for sale.
