Several parts of Bangladesh have been experiencing heatwaves and humid conditions for the past few days, while rainfall has declined due to weakening monsoon activity. The country’s highest temperature was recorded in Jashore at 36.4°C yesterday, while Dhaka recorded a maximum temperature of 36°C.

However, the heatwave may ease somewhat today, Thursday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty or squally winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour are also likely in several regions.

According to the 7am forecast issued by the Meteorological Department’s Storm Warning Centre, temporary gusty or squally winds from the south or southeast, with speeds of 45–60 kmph, along with rain or thundershowers, may sweep over Rangpur, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh and Sylhet regions. River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist warning signal No. 1.

Meanwhile, the five-day weather forecast said rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds are likely in many places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and in some places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions today. Some areas may experience moderately heavy rainfall.

Day and night temperatures across the country may remain nearly unchanged, the forecast said. The mild heatwave sweeping over Dhaka, Faridpur, Rangpur, Jashore and Khulna districts may subside.

The sky over Dhaka has remained cloudy since morning. According to the Meteorological Department, rain or thundershowers may occur in Dhaka and adjoining areas by 1pm today. Winds may blow from the south or southwest at 10–15 kmph, which could bring a slight drop in the day’s temperature.
