After a day of intense heat and a heatwave sweeping across 12 districts, rain began in Dhaka and several other parts of the country on Sunday morning, leaving many roads in the capital waterlogged.
Rain started in different parts of Dhaka around 4:15am on Sunday, September 20, following gusty winds. The winds eased after the rain began, but occasional thunder continued.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded 49mm of rainfall in Dhaka between midnight on Saturday and 9am Sunday. The highest rainfall in the country over the past 24 hours was 82mm in Narayanganj.
The rain caused water to accumulate on several roads in the capital, creating difficulties for pedestrians and commuters.
Earlier, the Meteorological Department’s Storm Warning Centre had forecast rain or thundershowers in Dhaka and adjoining areas during the six hours from midnight on September 20. The sky was expected to remain partly cloudy to temporarily overcast.
Winds from the south or southeast were forecast to blow at 8–12 kilometres per hour, while night temperatures were expected to remain largely unchanged.
Meteorologists said the sudden activation of the monsoon, which had remained relatively inactive, was responsible for the rainfall in different parts of the country.
On Saturday, heatwaves swept across 12 districts. Although Dhaka was not under a heatwave, residents experienced intense heat.
The Meteorological Department had forecast light rain in Dhaka and other areas, but the amount of rainfall was higher than expected.
