U.S. President Donald Trump announced that negotiations with Iran are set to begin Monday afternoon, suggesting that a potential agreement could avert planned military strikes.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said several key regional allies—including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Qatar—had urged Washington to hold off on strikes, expressing optimism that “there’s a deal.”
“There’s a deal on the Strait of Hormuz, and then there will be a deal on the nuclear issue—or what you might call the denuclearization of Iran,” Trump said.
He also claimed that Iran had requested the United States to step back from its planned military action, adding that the two sides are now engaging “in the form of a negotiation.”
According to a U.S. official cited by Axios, Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman held a phone call with Trump on Saturday, during which he expressed concern and sought clarity over Washington’s proposed approach toward Iran.
Meanwhile, Pakistan, Qatar, the UAE, Türkiye and several other countries have called on both Washington and Tehran to ease tensions and avoid further escalation, underscoring growing regional and international pressure for a diplomatic resolution.
