Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has said it is Prime Minister Narendra Modi who should apologise to students, not the other way around, accusing the government of failing to address the concerns of young people affected by the NEET examination controversy.
Rahul made the remarks while meeting the families of students who died by suicide following issues related to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in Mahabalipuram, near Chennai.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, the Congress leader said there could be no pain greater than parents losing a child. He said every young life lost leaves behind a family burdened with lifelong grief.
Rahul alleged that repeated question paper leaks, examination cancellations and the destruction of years of preparation overnight had exposed the deep flaws in India’s education system. He accused the authorities of expecting honesty from students while operating what he described as a dishonest system.
His comments came in response to recent remarks by Prime Minister Modi, who said he had forgiven students who had directed abusive language at him during protests over the NEET controversy.
Rahul criticised the Prime Minister for not visiting students whose futures had been affected by the examination irregularities or families mourning the loss of their children following the paper leak controversy.
He also alleged that the central government had completely failed to understand the suffering and trauma experienced by students and their families in the wake of the examination crisis.
The NEET examination has faced widespread criticism in recent years following allegations of question paper leaks, irregularities in the examination process and concerns over fairness, triggering protests by students and opposition parties across India.
