Iraq’s Kurdistan Region does not want to be drawn into escalating regional tensions, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has said, stressing a commitment to neutrality and support for Baghdad’s authority.
In an interview with Al Jazeera on Saturday, Barzani said the semi-autonomous region in northern Iraq has faced no external pressure to join the ongoing conflict triggered by the US-Israel war on Iran.
“No party has pressured us to get involved in the war, and we do not want to be part of any conflict in the region,” he said.
Barzani revealed that the region’s infrastructure has suffered significant damage from more than 1,000 missile and drone attacks since the war began on February 28. He said the strikes originated either directly from Iran or from militia groups operating inside Iraq.
Describing the attacks as “unjustified,” Barzani called for peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue, warning against further escalation.
He also reaffirmed the Kurdistan Regional Government’s support for the Iraqi federal government’s efforts to bring all weapons under state control, underscoring the need for stability and unified security across the country.
