Ukraine launched a major overnight drone offensive against Russia, with Moscow authorities saying nearly 600 drones targeted the Moscow region from Saturday evening to early Sunday.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 201 of the drones were destroyed over the Moscow region between Saturday evening and 6:30am Sunday. Three people were injured near the Moscow Ring Road, he said.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said an 83-year-old man was killed in a drone strike in the Podolsk area. Several other people were injured.
A large warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s biggest online marketplace, was also hit. The Kolyedino warehouse near the city of Domodedovo, close to one of Moscow’s main airports, was damaged and footage showed thick smoke rising from the facility.
Ukrainian authorities have accused Wildberries of being used in transactions involving military equipment, saying the company has been targeted as part of efforts to undermine the economic foundations of Russia’s war effort. The company has not independently confirmed the allegation.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had shot down around 822 Ukrainian drones across the country.
The southern Rostov region, which borders Ukraine, was also targeted overnight. Local authorities said three people were killed and another injured. Governor Yuri Slyusar said more than 150 drones and missiles were destroyed over three cities and nine districts.
Residential and industrial facilities were damaged in Kamensky district, while roofs of several buildings in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky were hit. Windows in a residential building and the city’s railway station were also shattered, according to the governor.
Russia also launched missile strikes on Kyiv early Sunday. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said fires broke out in at least two districts of the Ukrainian capital, including after debris fell in a northern suburb. Several vehicles caught fire, while another blaze was reported south of the city centre.
The latest attacks follow a Ukrainian strike on a major industrial facility in Russia’s Samara region on Saturday. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the target was the Progress centre, a key facility of Russia’s Roscosmos space agency involved in military space and communications technology.
Zelensky said Ukraine used its domestically produced Flamingo missiles to strike the facility, located about 900 km from the Ukrainian border. Kyiv also claimed to have targeted the Savasleyka airbase, around 700 km away.
Ukraine has intensified long-range strikes deep inside Russia in recent weeks, targeting military and industrial facilities as well as commercial infrastructure far from the battlefield.
Russia has continued its own attacks on Ukraine. Russian drone strikes caused casualties in the Dnipropetrovsk region, while several people were also injured in Zaporizhzhia. In Odesa region, a shoe factory warehouse and canteen caught fire following a Russian strike.
