A massive fire broke out at a major fuel storage depot near Sulaymaniyah in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, injuring at least 20 people and destroying dozens of fuel tankers.
The fire erupted shortly before midnight Monday at a depot in the Tanjaro area, one of the province’s key fuel supply centres. Several explosions were reported as the blaze spread through the facility.
Sulaymaniyah Deputy Director General Harsh Saeed Salim told local media that no deaths had been reported, while around 20 people suffered minor injuries.
Emergency response teams and security forces rushed to the scene after the fire broke out and worked to contain the flames.
Local sources said 34 petrol tankers and four gas-oil tankers were completely destroyed, while more than three million litres of fuel were consumed by the fire.
Sulaymaniyah Deputy Governor Shaho Othman confirmed that the blaze had been fully brought under control.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, and authorities have yet to release a full assessment of the damage.
