US President Donald J. Trump will present the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the four-member Artemis II crew during a ceremony at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on Friday, August 28.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EDT and will recognise the astronauts for their historic contribution to the US space programme.
The Congressional Space Medal of Honor is among the highest US honours associated with human spaceflight. It is awarded to astronauts whose achievements have made an exceptional contribution to the nation’s space programme.
Artemis II makes spaceflight history
NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, completed a 10-day mission around the Moon on April 10.
The mission marked the first crewed flight of NASA’s Orion spacecraft, which was designed to carry astronauts on missions beyond low Earth orbit. Artemis II provided a major test of Orion and its systems with humans aboard.
The crew also became the first humans in more than 50 years to travel beyond the Moon. They travelled farther from Earth than any humans had previously gone, setting a new distance record for human spaceflight.
Honouring the Artemis II crew
The August 28 ceremony will recognise the astronauts’ role in advancing NASA’s Artemis programme and its effort to return humans to deep space.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will join President Trump and the four astronauts at the awards ceremony at Johnson Space Center.
