- Russia launched waves of missiles and drones targeting the Ukrainian capital overnight into Monday, killing at least five people and injuring several others, Ukrainian authorities said, hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that another large-scale attack was imminent.
The assault, which was still ongoing early Monday, involved ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and attack drones, triggering explosions across Kyiv and sending residents scrambling for shelter in metro stations and underground facilities.
A residential building in Kyiv’s Podilskyi district partially collapsed following the strike, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration.
In the Darnytsia district, several multi-storey residential buildings were damaged, with emergency crews searching for people believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
“These are residential buildings — places where people slept and lived their ordinary lives,” Tkachenko said in a post on Telegram.
The latest attack came just hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of a possible renewed large-scale Russian assault on the capital.
It also follows a major Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv last week that killed at least 31 people.
In a message posted on Telegram late Sunday, Zelenskyy renewed his appeal to Ukraine’s Western allies to strengthen the country’s air defence capabilities, particularly through the supply of additional Patriot missile systems.
He argued that delays in replenishing Ukraine’s air defence arsenal only encourage Russia to intensify and prolong the war, which is now in its fourth year.
