- At least six people, including five children, were killed after several residential buildings collapsed in India’s financial capital Mumbai on Sunday, as heavy monsoon rains continued to wreak havoc across the city, disrupting transport services and forcing schools to close.According to civic authorities, two to three multi-storey houses collapsed in the Mankhurd slum area in eastern Mumbai, killing five children and one woman.The torrential rains also triggered landslides along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, forcing authorities to shut the key transport corridor and disrupting travel between the two cities. Television footage showed debris strewn across roads and rainwater pouring through the roof of a tunnel.Air travel was affected, while several long-distance train services, including routes connecting Mumbai and Pune, were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
Local media showed residents wading through flooded streets as authorities ordered schools and colleges to remain closed on Monday.
Heavy rainfall has also caused trees to topple across Mumbai, killing at least three people since late June, according to local media reports.
Mumbai received more than 100 mm (3.9 inches) of rainfall over the weekend, with some areas recording up to 161 mm (6.3 inches), authorities said.
India’s weather office has forecast continued light rainfall across many parts of the region on Monday, while authorities remain on alert for further disruptions.
