The United States has approved a proposed $5 billion sale of bombs, guidance kits and other military equipment to Saudi Arabia amid the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran and a series of attacks targeting the kingdom.

The US State Department announced the approval on Friday, saying the proposed deal would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s air-defence capabilities and help it respond to current and future regional threats.

According to the department, the sale would enhance Riyadh’s ability to defend its territory and improve interoperability with military systems used by the United States and its Gulf partners.

The State Department said the deal would also support US foreign-policy and national-security objectives while strengthening the security of Saudi Arabia, a designated “major non-NATO ally” of Washington.

Saudi Arabia has faced several drone and missile attacks since the United States and Israel launched their joint military campaign against Iran in February.

Iranian forces and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been blamed for the attacks.

The State Department has formally notified the US Congress of the proposed sale. The deal will still be subject to the required congressional process before it can be finalised.
