At least four people were killed and 20 others injured in Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon despite an ongoing ceasefire, Lebanese authorities said.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli forces carried out strikes from early Sunday (September 6) in Nabatieh, Arab Salim, Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Kfar Rumman.

In Arab Salim, Israeli forces ordered residents to evacuate a building before carrying out an airstrike on it. Two women were killed and six others were injured, according to local authorities.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said two more people were killed in an Israeli strike on Nabatieh al-Fawqa.

Israeli forces also carried out strikes in Nabatieh city, destroying a historic building owned by the brother of a Lebanese parliament member. Several nearby buildings were also damaged.

In Kfar Rumman, an Israeli strike destroyed the home of the town’s late former mayor. Five injured people were treated at a hospital in Nabatieh and later discharged.

Another strike hit the Sayyida Masouma Garden in Nabatieh, destroying what remained of a municipal park that had already been damaged in an earlier attack.

The Israeli military said the strikes were carried out in response to two drones allegedly launched by Hezbollah at Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. Israel described the drone attacks as a “clear violation” of the ceasefire.

Israeli airstrikes and ground operations in Lebanon have continued since Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel in March. According to Lebanese authorities, more than 4,300 people have been killed in the attacks.

Israeli forces also remain deployed inside Lebanon in a self-declared “security zone” extending roughly 10 kilometres into Lebanese territory.

The intensity of the attacks declined somewhat after the United States and Iran reached an understanding over the broader conflict, while Israel and Lebanon also signed a framework agreement in March. However, Israeli airstrikes, shelling and attacks on civilian infrastructure have continued in southern Lebanon.
