Ukraine launched more than 400 drones towards Russia’s capital overnight, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Tuesday, in one of the largest reported drone attacks on the Russian capital ahead of a key NATO summit in Ankara.
According to Sobyanin, Russian air defence systems intercepted the vast majority of the drones before they reached the capital.
“From the evening until 6:00 am, more than 430 drones were flying towards the Moscow region,” the mayor wrote on the state-backed MAX messaging platform.
He said most of the drones were destroyed at a considerable distance from the city, while 36 were intercepted on their final approach to Moscow.
Russian authorities did not immediately report casualties or major damage in the capital. However, emergency services were deployed to inspect areas where drone debris reportedly fell after the interceptions.
The attack came as NATO leaders prepared to meet in Ankara for a summit expected to focus heavily on the war in Ukraine, European defence spending and continued military support for Kyiv.
Long-range drone attacks have become an increasingly important element of the conflict, with Ukraine stepping up strikes on military facilities, energy infrastructure and strategic targets deep inside Russian territory. Moscow, meanwhile, has continued large-scale missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, targeting major cities and critical infrastructure.
Russia’s Defence Ministry has not released a nationwide breakdown of overnight interceptions, while Ukrainian officials have not commented on the reported operation.
The latest exchange underscores the growing reach of Ukraine’s drone campaign as both sides continue to intensify long-range attacks more than four years into the war.
