A Nigerian military aircraft crashed in the country’s south on Monday, killing all 32 people on board, including 25 passengers and seven crew members, President Bola Tinubu said.

The aircraft crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State while reportedly travelling from Edo State toward Lagos on a routine mission.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said radar contact with the aircraft was lost at around 9 a.m. local time shortly after takeoff.

The wreckage was later located near a naval base, prompting the Nigerian Air Force to launch search-and-rescue operations.

The aircraft was identified as an ATR-42, according to the Nigerian Air Force.

Video footage circulating on social media showed rescue personnel travelling by boat toward the crash site, while local residents gathered in the surrounding area.

A local resident said several trees were damaged when the aircraft went down. Human remains, clothing and shoes were reportedly recovered from the crash site.

Authorities have begun investigating the cause of the crash.
