Iran on Friday warned that it would retaliate against any attack on its infrastructure, including by launching strikes on Israel, as renewed fighting between Tehran and Washington heightened tensions across the Middle East.
Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, head of Iran’s top security body, said any attack on the country’s critical infrastructure would be met with a firm response.
“Any attack on infrastructure will be retaliated against, and the criminal Zionist regime responsible for these atrocities will not be safe from the response of our fighters,” Zolghadr said in a statement carried by Iranian state television.
The warning came as hostilities between the United States and Iran intensified this week in the most serious escalation since the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 aimed at formalising an earlier ceasefire and advancing negotiations to end the conflict.
The US military said it carried out overnight airstrikes between Wednesday and Thursday, targeting about 90 military sites across Iran.
However, Iranian authorities accused Washington of striking civilian infrastructure as well, alleging that bridges and railway links connecting Tehran with Mashhad, the hometown of late supreme leader Ali Khamenei, were hit in an attempt to overshadow his funeral.
According to Iranian officials, at least 17 people were killed in the latest US strikes.
The renewed tensions have also drawn Israel into the spotlight. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by telephone with US President Donald Trump on Thursday, during which Trump reportedly briefed him on Washington’s latest military actions in the Gulf.
Later on Thursday, Iranian state media reported that US and Israeli forces had attacked a military headquarters near Bushehr, home to Iran’s only civilian nuclear power plant.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel remained prepared to resume military operations against Iran if necessary.
“If required, we will act again with even greater force,” Katz said, underscoring Israel’s readiness to respond to any perceived threat.
The latest exchange of threats has further fuelled concerns that the fragile truce between Iran and the United States could collapse, raising the risk of a broader regional conflict.
