China has called for an immediate de-escalation of the war in Ukraine, voicing deep concern over the conflict’s escalating military trajectory and its mounting humanitarian toll.
Addressing the UN Security Council on Thursday, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Sun Lei, condemned attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, warning that continued military escalation is causing widespread suffering while undermining prospects for peace negotiations.
His remarks came as the conflict continued to intensify, with reports of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian oil facilities and igniting tankers in the Sea of Azov.
Sun urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, strictly comply with international humanitarian law, and return to dialogue as soon as possible to pursue a comprehensive and durable peace agreement.
He stressed that a lasting settlement must address the legitimate security concerns of all sides, tackle the root causes of the conflict in accordance with the UN Charter, and contribute to building a sustainable regional security framework.
Reaffirming Beijing’s support for a political resolution, Sun said China remains committed to an objective and impartial approach and is maintaining communication with all parties to facilitate peace efforts.
He added that China is ready to work with the international community to play a constructive role in advancing an early political solution to the Ukraine crisis.
