Iran has said that Americans voted against war following a crushing Republican defeat to Democrats in the US midterm elections.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf made the remarks in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday (November 4), Middle East Eye reported.
“Whether out of conscience or due to the cost of living, Americans have said ‘no’ to war, and we support this message,” Ghalibaf wrote.
Warning US decision-makers, he added that if the US government betrayed the will of its people to serve international financiers and blackmailers, they would find that “a nightmare will accompany our ‘no’.”
Ghalibaf suggested that US involvement in the war with Iran was a major factor behind the Republicans’ heavy electoral defeat.
The conflict has pushed up global energy prices, increasing the cost of living for Americans and putting pressure on household budgets, he said.
US President Donald Trump has also acknowledged that the Iran war affected the midterm election results, citing higher fuel prices as a factor influencing voters.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he believed Iran was partly responsible for the electoral outcome, while arguing that voters understood the significance of his actions against Tehran.
“People agree with what I’m doing with Iran, but they probably didn’t want to deal with the short-term consequences of paying higher energy prices. And I understand that,” he said.
