Myanmar has informed regional bloc ASEAN that detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health and will be properly cared for, according to the bloc’s special envoy.
At a meeting of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Myanmar’s representative said Suu Kyi, 81, is being looked after.
The remarks were relayed by Maria Theresa Lazaro, who has been seeking access to the detained Nobel laureate since her arrest following the 2021 military coup.
Suu Kyi is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence—recently reduced by one-third—on multiple charges including corruption, election fraud, incitement, and violations of state secrets laws.
Her allies maintain that the charges are politically motivated, while she has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
ASEAN diplomats met Myanmar’s foreign minister in person for the first time since the coup, aiming to revive a stalled peace initiative.
The bloc has largely excluded Myanmar’s leadership from high-level meetings due to its failure to implement the agreed “five-point consensus” peace plan.
The crisis in Myanmar has escalated into a prolonged civil conflict, reportedly killing around 100,000 people and displacing millions.
Although Myanmar now operates under a nominal civilian administration led by President Min Aung Hlaing, questions remain about political legitimacy and progress toward peace.
ASEAN officials, including Thailand’s foreign minister, have called for direct access to Suu Kyi to independently verify her condition.
Her exact whereabouts remain undisclosed, with only limited confirmation that she has been moved to a “designated location.”
