Funeral prayers were held on Sunday for Qatar’s Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, following his death at the age of 74.

The funeral prayer took place after the Maghrib prayer at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha, attended by members of the royal family, senior officials and mourners.

Rows of worshippers dressed in traditional Qatari attire offered prayers as the body of Sheikh Hamad lay shrouded before them. Following the service, his son and successor, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, joined close family members in carrying the coffin from the mosque.

Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 until voluntarily handing power to Sheikh Tamim in 2013, will be buried at Lusail Cemetery.

According to media reports, the funeral was conducted in keeping with Islamic tradition, with a simple burial ceremony reflecting humility and religious customs.

Qatar has declared an official mourning period until Wednesday. During this time, Emir Sheikh Tamim is expected to receive visiting heads of state, members of royal families and other dignitaries at Lusail Palace to offer condolences.
